Our Story

R.C. Portable Welding was built on decades of hands-on experience, problem-solving, and pride in doing the job right. Bob Swatek first discovered welding in high school shop class more than 37 years ago and quickly developed a passion for the trade, which grew into a lifelong career built on craftsmanship, creativity, and hard work.

In 1989, Bob launched R.C. Portable Welding and Fabrication with a simple goal: build something of his own and deliver quality work people could count on. Since then, the company has taken on everything from custom fabrication projects to large-scale commercial work, earning a reputation for versatility and dependable results.

Over the years, R.C. Portable Welding has contributed to a wide range of unique and high-profile projects, including work on Frank Lloyd Wright properties, Historic Third Ward storefronts, the Pabst Brewery redevelopment in Milwaukee, and Black Point Estate in Lake Geneva. Bob Swatek, the founder and front man of RC Welding, has over 37 years of experience in the welding and fabricating industry. We challenge you to present him with a job that he has not done before!

How it started…

Bob’s welding story in 1988 when he was a new hire at a welding and fabrication shop. He was asked to do some side work on weekends for a local tree trimming service. Bob went to look at it on a Friday after work, and was asked to return Saturday morning to complete the repair. Bob was young and pretty poor; borrowing $85 from his mother to buy a hand held grinder he needed to complete the job the next morning. With the job completed the next morning and a happy customer, Bob was able to pay his mother back and had $26 and some odd change of profit in his pocket. With that money Bob filled his gas tank which enabled him to drive around handing our business cards. That $26 was the start of what is present today.

Some of his first major jobs include custom fabricating bunk beds for the county correctional system, producing over 13,500 feet of staircase and balcony railing for a local water park.

Over the years, RC Portable Welding and Fabrication has been a part of many unique and industry-leading projects such as working on four different Frank Lloyd Wright properties, remodeling for Milwaukee’s Historical Third Ward store fronts, renovating of Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee and Black Point Estate in Lake Geneva, and Lake Lawn Resort, Delavan WI.

Yes. We weld aluminum along with many other types of metal, including mild steel, stainless steel, copper, cast iron, cast aluminum, titanium, and more. If you have a specific material or project in mind, contact us and we can talk through the best approach.

Yes. We have two forklifts and can help unload many heavy items depending on the project and jobsite conditions. Give us a call and let us know what needs to be moved so we can discuss the safest and best approach.

We provide portable welding services throughout Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois, and we can travel throughout much of the Midwest depending on the scope of the project. We typically do not take projects in Chicago or the surrounding Chicago suburbs.

Give our office a call and we will schedule a date and time to come out, review the project, and discuss what you are looking to have done. We measure every job ourselves, fabricate the project, and handle installation, which helps keep the process consistent from start to finish.

Yes. We do custom signs and have a CNC table that allows our team to create detailed pieces based on your vision. We can help take your idea from concept to finished product.
